Forty years ago, when he initially moved to Amsterdam, the musician and movie supervisor Steve McQueen would take a look at 17 th-century cityscapes by Johannes Vermeer in the Rijksmuseum and wonder what lay behind the “arbitrary, ordinary” activities shown in them.
Now he has caught the ghosts of a modern city, as soon as occupied by the Nazis, in a 34 -hour film being predicted onto that exact same gallery. It is the first time his movie Occupied City , which checks out the stories of greater than 2, 000 Amsterdam places during the battle years and now, is being shown as the complete work of art that he meant to create.
“When you see a paint, you have no concept of the context or that the people are,” he told The Art Paper “This is a mirror image of Amsterdam: it mirrors who we are today.”
McQueen, that won an Oscar for his movie 12 Years a Servant (2013 and increased to importance after winning the Turner Reward in 1999, dealt with this job with chronicler and filmmaker Bianca Stigter. Stigter recorded a serious background in her publication Atlas of an Occupied City, Amsterdam 1940 – 1945 McQueen’s pictures of the same locations were shot in between 2020 and 2023, as the country entered into Covid lockdown and observed both Black Lives Issue presentations and climate change marches.
